The domain location
The domain of Château Saint-Cyrgues is located in front of Petite Camargue, on the southern slopes of Costières de Nîmes.
Formed during prehistoric times by alluvial sediments from the Durance and Rhone rivers, the soil is made of cobblestones, flints, and gravels. This is why it is an exceptional soil for the vineyard, which produces wines of the finest quality.
The estate is about forty hectares wide and lies on the hillside midway between the Puech de Dardaillon (at an altitude of 146 m) and the archaeological site of Espeyran (at an altitude of 3-5 m). The grape varieties are mainly based on Syrah, Grenache, Carignan, Merlot, Roussane, and Grenache Blanc.
Espeyran was a major trading post under Hellenic influence that was strategically located on one of the Rhone’s tributaries. The site appears to have seen a huge trade in commercial foodstuffs. It was continuously inhabited from the VI to the I century BC.
Archaeological excavations have revealed the presence of many ceramics, including a great number of amphora, from various Mediterranean regions, that were particularly used for wine transport.
Wine has been present in the domaine de Saint-Cyrgues for a long time..
